COP28 Side-event: Enabling climate action through data, transparency and finance

Tuesday, 5 December 2023, 13:15-14:45 GST (GMT+4) Side-Event Room 2 & livestreaming

Co-hosted with: UNDRR, UNECE, UNOPS, UNU-EHS

Climate-related events are increasing in size, frequency, and severity. The scientific community, including the IPCC, has warned that this trend will continue to escalate with rising global temperatures. This generates a pressing need to recognise and expand the factors that enable climate action. Data, transparency, and accountability are all crucial enablers in this regard. With such measures, governments can improve their access to and oversight of climate financing, and speed up climate solutions.

The event will spotlight current advancements in climate data, finance, and transparency, including loss and damage data, modeling applications, and the Enhanced Transparency Framework. It will emphasize the need for enhanced statistics and reliable data systems to support reporting, policymaking, and public awareness. The event will also explore the use of new technologies and transparency frameworks to unlock climate finance. High-level UN speakers, government representatives, financial institution representatives, and other climate stakeholders will present diverse perspectives on these topics.
